Product was excellent but the service?
Ordered this camera from directly from amazon, received it after few days and when I unpack the package I realized that the manual and the software CD's are missing. Contacted the amazon customer service but wasn't so helpful have to ring them few times and ask for the manager in-charge. All he suggested was to order the manual and the CD's separately from the Canon so they will reimbursed the cost. Came to this via Pentax, Olympus and Canon DSLRs including recently the 40D (too heavy, not intuitive) and 1000D (cheap build quality). The 500D handles well and feels well made. The 15MP makes cropping more useful and there is no visible image noise up to 800 ISO. Remarkable when you think back to the introduction of 400 ISO film which was considered specialist and grainy! Fantastic DSLR
I bought this camera about 2 weeks ago and it has exceeded all expectations. Being my first DSLR I tried to make sure I bought the best camera for my money. Initially I was going to buy the 450D on price but the extra few megapixels and better screen (which is stunning) swayed me. I am about to attempt a DSLR course so guess what.... I needed a camera. My old Canon digital compact didn't cut it! This camera exceeds my expectations. It is easy to set up & use. My wife is an avid user of the point & click function & I use the rest. Excellent camera
I have upgraded from a Canon 350D to this 500D. Why? a) More pixels so I can crop without worrying too much. b) Screen on the 350D is far too small for my eyesight. The 500 screen is marvellous even held high. c) Auto Sensor cleaning. d) better quality images. e) video is a bonus but not on my wish list but nice to have anyway and it works great. This is my 5th digital Canon EOS and by far my favorite, AND the cheapest, huh? how does that make sence? technology eh ! ... The clarity and fantastic simpleness to use this camera is outstanding, and I would urge anyone with a few quid that's "umming and ahhing" on which camera to buy then go for this one ... i upgrade to this from a 400d which is also a good camera. the 500d has a live view mode which i sometimes find useful, it also has a very good hd facility got mine in time to take it on holiday to malta, cracking photos wouldnt hesitate to recommend.

Great Camera for moving up from digital compact - Video also.
I recently bought Canon EOS 500d - I looked also at the new Sony alpha 380 (video clip review WhatCamera)among others. I had read as many reviews as I could but what helped me most was the video clips by Whatcamera magazine and a YouTube video clip by a IIlvy Njiokiktjen who won the EOS 500d camera in Canon contest young new talent 2008. Although some people say the camera case feels a bit plastic, I disagree and feel that overall the build quality is v.good and on a par with other manuafacturer...

Brilliant latest addition, but with a few reservations
Having just got this latest addition to the Canon EOS range (to replace my ageing 10D), I just had to try it out, of course!This is a welcome upgrade, with the Digic 4 processor living up to expectations. Using the Custom Function7 (Auto Lighting Optimiser), you'll be hard-pressed to come up with a badly-exposed pic!
