Great video but build quality concerns
We bought the HV40 as a replacement for our ageing Sony TRV330e, plumping for dv tape as we're hopeless at making time to edit captured video to disk. After much agonising and having already purchased a Canon digital camera we decided that the best option would be the HV40 rather than the HV30 on the basis that its a long term investment and better to get the "bells 'n whistles" now. As an aside, finding dv tape cameras or those with a larger price tag in shops is nigh on impossible so you're ...

Canon HV40 Review by a Film Student.
I got a Canon HV40 for Christmas and have recently be using it to film my five minute production for University. Compared to some of the small miniDV HD cameras at Uni this in my opinion is far superior. We use Sony camcorders at Uni (I can't remember the model) and they lack certain expected features such as manual exposure. You have to adjust most settings through the touch screen which is rather annoying as the screen quickly becomes covered in finger prints, adjusting whilst shooting becomes...

Good for prof
Just received it. The only dis- noise. I have purchase the Rode mic for it as I knew about the noise from the forums. It didn't help too much, but the voice record sounds much more professional with Rode. I am still investigating that, but according to all my long term researches this is the best camcorder in the market (taking in account the home camcorders only) if you are up to serious editing- go for this canon. If you are just a beginner, the cheapest from Argos will do.

Great Camera but the price!!!
strange how this very same camera can be bought in the US for just £416!!! Wonder what magic extra features are added during those few extra miles from China? Perhaps it's the plug that makes all the difference in price :)

Canon Legria CV40- Is this a joke?
I have been provided with a Canon Legria CV40 as an insurance claim replacement for a Sony HDR HC3. This is not an adequate replacement as there is no comparison between the 2. The Sony software worked and interfaced with Windows products. The Legria does not on the automatic settings and it took hours to work out how to overcome this. The camera claims to have a still photo facility. Unfortunately it uses out of date hardware to capture this (the Mini SD memory card - NOT SUPPLIED WITH THE CAME...

Just great
It seems to me that most of the reviews of this device miss the point. The HV40 produces great output but in tape format. Some see this as a disadvantage (sure, it takes a full hour to transfer a single tape to a PC) but, in my opinion, the advantages of tape greatly outweigh this: 1 - Sooner or later your camera will malfunction, be stolen or simply be dropped. With a tape machine, up to an hour of footage is at risk (not 20-30 as would be the case when using a 240Gb Hard disk monster. S...

Canon HV40
Great value for money. Probably the cheapest HDV camcorder which records on TAPE, yes TAPE!. Anyone who really knows what they are doing with image quality / compression / post production will know what im on about! Down side is not a great choice of manual control over functions, without the camera trying to compensate in one way or another, but then again at the price you pay.... As a point and shoot camcorder it is an easy 10/10!, way beyond the majority HDV cameras which compress the life...

Canon Legria HV40
This is the second HV40 that I have owned as my first stolen. I liked it so much that I purchased another. I have owned this model for almost 2 years now and so far have not found another to match it for price and specification. When I bought my first one, I also bought a pack of Sony HD tapes. There is absolutely no difference in record/playback quality between standard or HD tapes, stick to standard DV tapes, it's not worth the massive difference in price. When shooting indoors, I r...

Video freeze
I have had the Canon HV 40 for approx 3.5 weeks. I am pleased with the picture in terms of quality and clarity. However on using Sony HDV tapes , purchased at the same time, the playback will sometimes feeze with a sound interuption. This according to the manual is symptons of a dirty video head. As it occured within 3 mins of usage, I discounted this. I contacted Canon and explained the problem. They suggested a different make of tape or a new tape of the same type, this I did, to no avail. I h...
