Garmin eTrex Summit HC Handheld GPS
I purchased a Garmin GPS some years ago when they were rather new to the market. I have to say that I did not find it very useful since it needed a very clear view of the sky in order to get a fix (and even then it was slow), and it consumed batteries at an alarming rate. Things have clearly moved on a lot, and the Garmin eTrex Summit HC Handheld GPS proved on my recent trip to the Dolomites to be a reliable and useful aid. It established a fix quickly and reliably, and could maintin this eve...

Nice GPS - if you factor in the cost of maps
This is a neat and robust GPS, with a clear screen and easy to use. BUT do not be fooled by the illustration as we were: to get the level of map detail shown on the GPS, you have to buy Garmin Mapsource Topo Great Britain for about £80. (You also need a DVD drive, and a lot of patience to get through the slightly flaky Garmin on-line licence key system.)The maps themselves are an odd mixture of features for trekking: full contour information and tracks, but few OS-like land features such a...

Have no faith in it
I'm on my second Summit HC, the first one going back as faulty as would only track for a short time before crashing and the replacement isn't much better, just going for slightly longer periods between crashes. It's not even immediately obvious that it's crashed because the display just stops updating - potentially dangerous if you're depending on it, and just very annoying if you were hoping to have a nice trail to view on Google Earth (or similar) after your walk/bike ride.If it worked reli...

No Regrets
Been using this GPS for about four years for walking the Wainwrights, mainly to record the 'as walked' route and download to MemoryMap software package after the event - for this purpose the GPS has been excellent. Sometimes I will plan a route using MemoryMap on the PC and upload this to the GPS (very easy to do) and the GPS can then be used to navigate the route. The GPS functions are very easy to use. The most useful for me have been 8 figure grid reference display (gives additional confidenc...

Excellent basic sat nav
I upgraded from my older version of the summit, and am very pleased with the updated model. Longer waypoint names, more detailed info, easier to navigate through the screens and a much better GPS fix. Some reviews complaining about the mapping, but this is not primarily a mapping GPS - if you want good maps buy a Memory Map or SatMap at three times the price. I carry a paper map, which is a much better navigation aid than a little screen, and use the GPS for double checking my position, follow...

not impressed
i was really disappointed with this product.the mapping that comes with it is very poor, not even showing the main A roads near to us. the maps that you are then forced to buy are incredibly expensive. it is not compatible with other digital mapping systems. we sent it back for a refund. if you are planning to buy this product, i would suggest you do your research, including how much it will cost you to make it useful to you with suitable mapping.

Don't forget to count in £150 mapping software, this does not replace a map or a compass.
The Summit HC has proven useful for geocaching and following waypoints for routes marked only by GPS, however this does have it's flaws at the same time. The Compass does not work, full stop. I have calibrated it many times with little success. It will never show your real direction. Ever. I was on the Isle of Skye follow a way-marked trail in 5 foot visibility, and managed to walk myself onto a thin ledge leading to nothingness and a very steep fall because I was following the Garmin Comp...
