Great GPS but could be even greater
This is my first walking/trekking GPS and I am generally very pleased with it. I'm glad I opted for a wrist worn device, rather than a portable brick, even if it does lack colour and mapping. For me a significant part of the enjoyment of trekking is the exploration and navigation and I want to use the Foretrex as a companion to a conventional map and compass. Two steps forward two steps back
I've used this for several trips now and have gotten to know this little device quite well. Previously I had a Foretrex 201 and a couple of other Garmins which I used when running or walking in the hills. Great GPS data logger
I Spent a while on the Garmin website looking at the foretrex gps devices. Garmin's target market for this is all over the place; If you are in the military there are options for programming in your parachute jumps! Great GPS and worth the extra over the Foretrex 101
I had Foretrex 101 for the last 5 years and put it through its paces. It was great to have navigation data right at your fingertips with a fairly good ability to get a lock quickly (although it sometimes had to work hard when the signal was blanked by the vehicle body). It did basic navigation on a level with the Geko 201 (effectively the same unit). It was pretty robust (and cheap to get fixed by Garmin - £30 fixed fee). Very Disappointing
This items is not as good as I thought. The compass is useless, I found it always mistakes the direction. It very wastes the battery. The map is not clear, I couldn't make sense with that map. How very disappointing!

Some good some poor
I had seen a friends 201 and was impressed by it. I wanted it to measure speed and distance when skiing, windsurfing and sailing cats. This it does well enough. The GPS works well giving map references in a lot of formats including OSThe computer link just saves a gpx file which you can't seem to review or edit the data. Garmin Foretrex 401
I've had my Foretrex 401 for a few weeks now and quite satisfied. It's a plain and simple GPS, no frills, no maps. There are a few quirks but it does the job well. The receiver is very sensitive. It locked on with ease in London where my Nuvi wouldn't get a signal (too much RF and high buildings). The two AAA batteries seem to last me about two days continuous use. useful GPS
I have just purchased this bit of kit and it setup easily and worked well.My main gripe is the poor documentation regarding computer link. As yet I have not managed to get it to work.I have used it sailing with gloves on and I was able to press the buttons OK. The strap is too short except for a thin wrist, which I do not have, and the extension strap rather cumbersome and difficult to fasten over a dry suit sleeve. I will have to modify the strap but the unit itself is fine.
