Safely back from Exmoor
I have just returned from Exmoor where I used my Garmin for the first time. I used it in conjunction with Memory Map software - allowing me to create OS Explorer 1:25000 scale mapping routes which I then downloaded to the Garmin as listed waypoints (routes). I did try using it manually - typing in given waypoints from guide books but this is a tad time consuming and tedious and doesn't help battery life. Although the digital mapping is easier to use, it does come at a price (Dartmoor/Exmoor £80...

A good entry level GPS, well suited to first-time geocachers
In the box you get the GPS, a lanyard (just the right length), easy start guides in multiple languages, and a CDROM containing the user guide. What you don't get are batteries or a pc connection cable. The GPS itself is robustly built. It has a basic LCD screen and you can turn the backlighting on or off manually or automatically, as you wish. The buttons are protected by thick membranes, requiring a good firm push to activate them and overall there is a good degree of protection from ingre...

The Ideal companion for a map and compass!
I bought an original GPS12 years ago used it once and never again, well the technology has come along way since, spent a long time researching gps units, with maps or without, colour, bw, etc etc. The basic Etrex H is all I need, I have Quo maps I can print out as many maps as I like time and time again, so I can't see the need for a tiny map on a screen plus Quo interfaces perfectly with the gps unit. My mate has the old Etrex which is on a par with the GPS12 and never gets used, the new H mode...

Good for starting with GPS
After a short period sorting out how the Etrex H works, I look forward to using it regularly on holidays. It is quite slow to do this but by editing (Mark) waypoints you can input the exact map co-ordinates, Latitude and Longitude, found from Google Earth and so mark and find hotels, railway stations, restaurants etc with confidence. While on holiday, mark your position with a waypoint and then wander around foreign parts knowing that you cannot get lost - simply use Goto the waypoint and use th...

Indispensible accessory
I bought one of the original eTrex devices about five years ago but the current model (eTrex H)is a completely different animal. The appearance is identical to the original, but that is where the similarities end. Garmin have done a great job of removing all the problems with the original eTrex. It's now very responsive and usually takes less than a minute to find satellites from when you press the power switch. Accuracy is usually well within 10 metres even in normal mode (ie witho...

Let down by instruction manual
I bought an eTrex for one purpose only. That was to be able to read OS Grid coordinates during a walk, because like almost everybody who has navigated using an OS map and compass, there is always the time when it is not possible to be totally certain where you are. I understood this could be done with the eTrex, but was not able to find anywhere that told me how to do it. In practice after setting the device to use OS coordinates, it is simplicity itself. Pressing the "Page" button cycles yo...

Much better than the original
Having used an eTrex for many years in the course of our Geocaching hobby, we were always a little frustrated with its lack of sensitivity when under trees. With this new "H" model, (the H stands for High Sensitivity) that problem is a thing of the past. It even picks up a good signal indoors.

Fast responder
Most GPS units and mapping programmes aren't compatible with Macs so I just wanted a simple, basic unit. This finds the satellites really quickly and works well in built up areas. It gives me the grid reference, distance travelled, speed etc and that's all I ask of it.Good value and perfect for route finding in conjunction with a map.

Simple, but high standard
-- Good --- Very simple menus- Very good satellite accuracy- Feels durable- Easy-to-use interface- Perfect for beginner geocachers -- Bad --- Nothing at all, considering the priceThis item is bottom of the range, yes, but it performs very well and does what it's supposed to do. Easy to mark waypoints, navigate to waypoints, create routes etc.If you're a beginner geocacher, trust me, buy this!

Great with 1 exception
I was brought one for Xmas, couldn't wait to use it but the cable supplied by memory map for GPS-USB-PC transfer does not work for Vista computers. They are the most unhelpful people around & I won't be buying anything else from them. Garmin on the other hand were excellent & found a driver update I could use for Vista. First rate customer services. So buy it if your XP & below, or if you have a certified Garmin cable or else you will have to find a fix. Garmin are working on the vis...
