Clear and easy to use
As a no-frills sat nav this performs well. Occasionally it seemed to get stuck in the depths of Snowdonia where the satellite coverage was a bit patchy but for normal use it is reliable and quick. The graphics are not fancy but clear. You can search for named stores and attractions as well as by address. The voice is clear and copes with announcing street names even in Welsh!

Great Value For Money Sat Nav
Fantastic SAT Nav. Worked straight out of the box and all you need to know is a Post Code. It identifes whether you are exceeding speed limit, where speed cameras are and tells you the roadname you are turning in to. If you go the wrong way or take a slight detour then it quickly recalculates the route. For the money this is excellent and it makes a big difference if you are driving anywhere unfamiliar. Good for basic usage but advance planning of routes is awkward
I have had the Nuvi 1240 for two weeks now. It was sent from Germany but, with standard postage, arrived within three days of the Amazon order.There is minimal documentation and no software CD in the package so expect to find yourself on the Garmin web site very soon in order to get the PDF documentation and to download the system upgrading software and maps management software.I had some problems with the unit turning itself off when re-routing (possibly when avoiding U-turns) but t...

Didn't disappoint
This is my first Sat-Nav. I did some research and was looking for a model that told me the name of roads I was to turn on to. I didn't want to spend too much and wanted something that would work well. The Ecoroute facility (which tells you the most fuel efficient route from A-B)sold it to me. This model did what I expected and got me sucessfully through a 230 mile journey at the weekend without problem. I wanted a new sat nav after my Navman finally gave up the ghost after being used, on an almost day-to-day basis, for 4 years. I went to Halfords after watching an online review of the Tomtom One IQ model but, after talking to the store manager who sang the praises of Garmin - 'the market leader' - decided to get the Nuvi 1240 with EU mapping. Lastest map guarantee update is a pain
I have a TomTom sat nav and bought this one as a "trial" of another product for my parents. The menus are clearer and more simple to navigate than TomTom, and the graphics look nicer too. However, the good points stop here.The pain comes in when using the 60-Day nüMaps guarantee. It involves going to Garmin's website to download a file which is nearly 4GB in size (note: many computer operating systems are only about 1GB)! My home broadband is 10Mbps and it took me over 3 hours to down...

i would not advise pedestrians to buy this
I like to walk about london looking at galleries, visiting parks and out of the way places, so thought the Garmin 1240 with city xplorer would fit the bill. My main complaint - as with another reviewer - is that journeys cannot be planned in advance. i have to go outside my house in the street to get a GPS signal.
