Great device for geocaching
First things first, this GPS receiver is really targetted at the outdoor enthusiast and is not really intended for in car use. If you are looking for an in car navigation device, then I suggest you look elsewhere. If you are a Garmin fan, the NUVI series are pretty good. These in car devices are both cheaper and more appropriate than this device. If you are looking for a device for walking, geocaching, cycling etc, then read on.I have the 550 model - the one without the maps. I find ...

Other Maps Can Be Used...
Don't believe the review that states that other maps can't be used, they can. There are a number of mapping options to overcome the limited basemap (the same problem occurs on most handheld GPSrs). The solutions include:1. Topo GB from Garmin (rather expensive and limited)2. Garmin Discoverer range of SD/MicroSD cards (these are full OS maps in 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 of national parks and trails). These are not cheap, but excellent.3. FREE maps using data from t...

Bargain well performing unit, Works with many Free Maps
I was in two minds if I needed the Oregon200 or another better model. After buying the 200 due to lower price, I am now satisfied it is good value for money and the extra cost for the higher models is unneccessary. The 300 and 400 have electronic compass and barometric pressure measurement of altitude. It is worth noting that the 200 does measure altitude by satelite, accurate enough for most people, it also has an electronic compass, also showing a bearing off your chosen course. The only diffe...

Very disappointed so far
I was bought (at my request) this Gps as a birthday present in July from Amazon to take with me whilst walking with the Ramblers. I have a Garmin forerunner 301 which has worked very satisfactorily for many years, a Garmin Nuvi for the car and my partner has 3 Garmin Gps's for the small plane he flies so I thought I would be very safe with this purchase. However straight away I realised I had been bought the version without the map and this was an additional £199 for the Uk basemap...

Do not bother
The electronics is good but the software is lacking. Access to the micro sd card is limited while out and about. The on board map is pointless and the Garmin maps that you buy in are over expensive. No third party maps seem to be allowed either.

Solid multipurpose GPS let down by dim screen
Nice, mid-priced waterproof handheld GPS that can be used for a variety of functions from walking to MTB'ing/motorcycling as well as in-car use. With the opensource map from Talkytoaster installed, it routes fine on and off-road. Be aware however, that there is no speaker on the 200. Whilst turn-by-turn routing works, there are no spoken directions and there's no audible proximity alert either. The major downside is that out of the box, the screen and the original coloured...

Hits the spot
I have to agree with the majority of reviewers, this is a treat to use and it gives fine accurate performance. No complex setting up or calibration is required. The touch screen is an important advance over selection buttons which on other models have frustrated me.The accuracy is spot on i.e. to about 12 feet in good reception conditions (most of the time). It is ideal for geocaching: for descriptions, hints, previous logs and recording your success. The memory is perfectly adequate ...

Great navigation
I love that machine. Excellent handling with the touch screen and its easy to learn how to handle it.Unfortunately, the topo maps are to much expensive but luckily there are not fundamental to use the garmin. It supportetd me on my geocaching activities very well. The navigation is quick and very exact so it`s easy to find the cachs (+/- 3m).And by the way, it inculdes more or less the same functionalities as the 300 Series but it`s much cheaper.

Garmin Oregon 200 Handheld GPS
A marvellous bit of kit. Used this for geocaching and found it to be very accurate. You don't need the extra features of higher spec Oregon models unless you're gung ho for features. Pop in a cheap as chips large capacity micro sd card and the smaller memory is not an issue. The missing electronic compass is irrelevant unless you simply must know your bearing whilst stationary - the compass is active as soon as you start walking. Well worth purchasing.

very good but small failures
Note first you must buy a map of the country you are visiting (or a map for the UK) as they are not in-built. They are available in microSD card format for about 1/10 of the unit price. The UK map contains 99% of UK road names. It has a comprehensive waypoint system with a semi-permanent memory (which is very impressive as I assumed after removing the batteries they would all disappear). Route calculation is faster than using a road atlas (it does not take more than ten seconds). I have used...
