I am grateful to the previous reviewers description of the firmware solution. I have just bought this because it was the only option for me as I don't want Panasonic or Toshiba and have just bought an LG television and seems sensible to match the recorder. So far I can only play on it, but that playing is fine. Digital switchover problem
 
This is a good machine but it stopped working properly on digital switchover (March 2012) - 14 months after we bought it. It was freezing, not playing discs, and generally unresponsive. I was about to bin it but some Googling revealed I wasn't the only one. I then found out that a firmware upgrade was needed. I downloaded this from the LG site and eventually managed to install despite the fact the instructions did not appear properly on the LG website. The trick turned out to be to remove the

Love My New LG Recorder
 
My faithful old recorder gave up the ghost after eight years when insisting that new DVD's were 'dirty' and a subsequent repair failed to fix it. Not needing a recorder with a hard drive (I have a Virgin + box) this machine at £103:00 seemed really inexpensive and was suspicious of how good it may be. But it seems I made the right choice. No one should consider the LG DRT389H before carefully studying the very latest reviews and the updates made to early ones for as will be seen the failure rate on this once the warranty expires is well covered here as well as on a google for this.I bought mine from Amazon in May 2010 and it died 18 months later.
