Fantastic reliability and ease of use
I won't repeat much of what's already been said in the other reviews, but to summarise, I've been using the ReadyNAS for over a year now, so my review is based on proper hectic usage rather than out-of-the-box or 1 month usage.Overall, i'm *very* impressed with its performance and ease of use. Not cheap, but a bit of homework and you have a capable NAS box
This is not for the home market - it's just too pricey for most users. For small offices, it's perfect - reliable storage, expandable, idiot-proof (mostly, though someone will no doubt prove me wrong), and quiet. Having used these for a while, the first thing I do is buy additional memory for it (from crucial.com - about 30GBP at time of writing), which makes it even faster, and a UPS for good measure. I really wanted to like this NAS, but I find that it has no redeeming features. The first one I received was faulty, the fan failed within 16 hours of turning it on for the first time. Okay I thought, I'll email Netgear and ask for a replacement fan (imagining that one would be easy to fit). If "setting a static IP" and "submasks" do not mean a thing to you, better stay away!
I understand this is a high end product. I also dig that in theory this is a fab product, it can do all sorts of stuff for you. But if you are like me, that "setting static IP" and "submasks" do not figure in your regular vocabulary, you should think twice whether this is the right storage solution for you. Be careful of the disks you purchase
I have nothing against this device as such. It looks nice and on the surface seems to do exactly what you would want it to do. However, having been stung by purchasing a set of disks and a NAS Raid Server which did not work (not this one, and one that has now been returned to its rightful owner - the manufacturer), everyone should be aware that these devices will NOT work with any hard disk that you may purchase. Having tried various NAS solutions throughout the years, this wipes the floor with them.Yes it is more on the costly scale of the market, but it's worth every penny. Great product, very solid and I think certainly supports the "you get what you pay for" idea.I would have given it 5 stars if the initial install instructions were just a little clearer - I started it up and ended up with only 2Tb of storage rather than 4. Very poor, don't buy this
Brand new shiny NAS, brand new shiny WD Enterprise disks. Put the disks in, switched it on, it boots up to a point and then gives the message: "Kernel Panic", well, this simply shouldn't happen and it's bad news. So, I sent it back, and the disks - which were no longer able to be formatted by my Mac - what's all that about? I have been using PCs and MACs for almost 20 years, this rates amongst the worst pieces of kit I have ever had the misfortune to buy. My advice, steer clear of it.
