Died - unrecoverable
 
These seem to die with a worrying frequency, it's worth doing a search for "WD Essential recovery" and seeing how many actually go pop.The double whammy problem though is this: the drive encrypts the data in hardware, so you can't pull the drive out and image it to recover your files. I don't see WD are willing to reveal the encryption codes anytime soon.I'm going to configure something more robust. Nothing wrong with WD drives, but their MyBook hardware is suspect...

It's a good piece of kit. Not exactly 2TB, as you would imagine with all HDD, but it's close enough.This thing is SILENT. When I say silent, I mean S-I-L-E-N-T. It sits right in between my laptop and external monitor (for the time being, until I finish my custom build), and I can barely hear it. When it's working overtime, such as transferring large files (I'm talking files in the 100GB+ range, as I tend to do), fare enough you can hear a slight whisper, but other than that it's silent. If

Spent around 3 weeks putting my data on to this drive when it died.Can't be repaired.Lost all my data.I've bought a total of 3 Western Digital external hard drives and 2 have failed on me.I will buy another brand in future.

One big tip.When you get to setting a password for you hard drive make sure you do it.Now you do have the chance not to set a password which is what i did as i didnt want the hassle of remembering another password for a simple back up drive. Unfortunately the hassle was not setting a password,because the first time i shut it down and restarted it the drive wanted a password i did not set.If you google this problem you will find many more issues relating to this.Dont waste your time with support
