Pleased but not perfect
I purchased this product to consolidate my 2TB+ collection of media into one place. As a hard drive the unit functions well although seek times are a little longer than I would prefer after it wakes up from sleep. It does not whizz like an SSD but then this product is about storage not speed. I decided to pick up the new Western Digital 3tb drives with the new usb 3 interface before the Vat rise.Initial inpressions of the drive is that it is the exact same size as the previous Mybook. I bought 2 of these 1TB drives a week ago.. seemed fine at firstif just a little slow. This morning one of them is not working.Tried everything to no avail, it will have to go back!I have no way of removing or retrieving my files. Doesn't mount after restart
The drive seemed fine, and good value for money, and I'd been happy with mybook external drives previously. Unfortunately I've found that each time I restart my computer (Mac Pro running OS X Snow Leopard) the drive doesn't mount. Unplugging it and plugging it in again solved the problem, but I didn't want to have to do this every time. Nice drive, awful software
First of all I must say that I haven't been able to try this drive with USB 3, as my PC is stuck with crusty old USB 2. Using a large external HD such as this over USB 2 is a very, very slow affair, and copying large amounts of data can take many hours. This is of course not a fault of the drive, just the ancient USB 2 standard. I am 99% in love with this machine
I already have a 500GB WD hard drive and I tend to save very little on my computer so I was looking for a 1TB hard drive to back up everything from my hard drive and computer. I've been using the WD My Book Essential 3.0 2 TB External Hard Drive for a couple of months now and despite my initial optimism it is slowly beginning to irritate me.
