Working fine so far...
Chose this drive based on manufacturer, storage size and price. Other makes seem to be having more failures, according to reviews. Only had it for a month, but working well as an external back-up for my laptop (Windows Vista 32 bit home premium).Set-up was just plug in and go - ignoring the "need to install a driver" window that popped up. File access is fast enough for me, only using the USB 2 functionality (seems to access photos as quickly as from the hard drive).I haven't both...

WD MPE 1TB Hard Drive compact fast reliable
Having purchased a variety of desktop and portable drives over the years i have found the Western Digital My Passport range to be the best of the lot. Compared to my Seagate 3TB drive used to backup my desktop PC the WD MPE 1TB i purchased for my laptop did the same task in a fraction of the time. There have been no glitches or problems, this is a reliable plug and play device. It worked flawlessly in my Desktop PC using Win Xp , My laptop using Win7 and even in my companies work laptop using ...

New generation
I'm giving this little beauty top marks not for speed of transfer, but for it's neat small size and huge capacity. It has a proffesional 'quality,' feel about it and is around 75% the size of my WD250 gig USB portable hard drive. Okay, speed and differences between USB2 and USB3. First noticeable thing is the port on the side of the drive. It's not the same as a USB2. It consists of two small flat ports joined, one of which appears to be similar to the one found on an HTC phone. This mean...

Help with setting up this product for other customers
I recieved this hard drive for Christmas and have just set it up after reading all the reviews on Amazon. I found these very helpful and would like to share my experience with this product. It's pretty easy to set up. I plugged it in and my Windows 7 computer said there was no driver for this device, but it still read it. When you open the hard drive location, it has all the pre-loaded software on. After reading the other reviews about it, I must admit that I was a bit panicked, but I decid...

Whatever happened to plug'n'play?
External hard-drives are great. You can load them up with all your files, transport them easily and plug them in to whatever computer you want, in order to work on your files. Not this one.WD, in their infinite wisdom, decided that being a plain usb mass storage device was not good enough for them. Any time you plug this device into a windows PC it will nag you to install an SES driver. Not very handy of you're using a work, university or public PC and have no chance of installing new...

Fast.
Fast. That's the one word review. The slightly longer version marvels at how compact this little brick is, the size of its capacity, the sheer excitement of transferring a 120gb of stuff onto it and barely worrying the TARDIS like capacity. Note that I didn't even bother with the software. Always seems like useless attempt to drive a wedge between the computer and the drive. Oh and it has an entertaining blue light which goes off and on during transfers.

Good product
* stylish but it does scratch easily* very quiet* generates little heat* USB3 but also compatible with USB2 systems(can't comment on USB3 as my system is USB2 only)* fast large file transfers(can't comment on small file transfers - only using it for large media files)* pretty inexpensive for what you are getting reallyI have only had mine for just over a week but I have also a WD My Passport 250Gb drive which I have been happily using for well over a year without any i...

Excellent back-up choice
The Usb 3.0 version of WD My Passport Essential is a winner. It's very compact and light (more than what the images you see online suggest) and is also good looking. The plastic case is glossy & can pick up fingerprints but it still looks good. The usb 3.0 cable provided fits tightly at both ends. It's fully compatible with Usb 2.0. I got double the speeds with Usb 3.0 compared to Usb 2.0. Once you experience the benefits of Usb 3.0 you can't go back to Usb 2.0. I also liked the WD Smartware whi...

Avoid WD Smartware software like the plague
The physical WD My Passbook External Drive is good (so far). I have purchased two. However, as has been the case in some previous Amazon reviews, I strongly advise anyone to stear clear of the WD Smartware; especially the security bolt-on called UnLock. My advice is to instead stick with reliable software such as Microsoft 7 Backup & Restore or Norton Ghost; both are streets ahead of what I now term WD "Dumbware". Where do I start? I have just spent the best part of a day attempting to get...
